During the nailbiting NBA Finals, Boston fans have been flocking to the Faneuil Hall tourist trap to summon the spirit of the cigar-smoking Auerbach statue. Talented photojournalist Matt Stone has documented the phenomenon with a Boston Herald slideshow.

Stone has documented the bizarre poses that Celtics fans do with Red, including make-believe strangling and pretending to pick his nose.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1435" title="matt-stone-auerbach" src="http://tackytouristphotos.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/matt-stone-auerbach.jpg" alt="Any possibility of giving Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach his dignity back?
Will stripping away the dignity of the Greatest Basketball Coach in History help out Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett on the court this week?

We don’t know, but we do know this: die-hard Celtics fans have been kissing Red and affectionately picking his nose for years.

Some tourists make trick photography — in this case the “forced perspective” illusion of holding an object — look really easy. Take a look at the amazing poise and finesse displayed by this casual cliffwalker in Zion National Park and these architecture buffs at the Eiffel Tower.

But some tourists, such as Ankura, Andy and Debra, are still getting the hang of it.

In case there are ANY doubts how the above attempt at a Tacky Tourist Photo came out, take a look:

SUBMITTED BY: Rebecca & Steven Resnick LOCATION: Israel (2008)

Their family vacation was only a year ago, but Rebecca and her brother Steven can’t remember exactly where they took these precious “Hole-in-the-Head” shots of Moses and a Crusader.

“We know it was somewhere in northern Israel, possibly in the Golan Heights area, but disagree on whether it was a historic site or just a rest stop,” Rebecca says. “Basically we both remember stopping for water, a packaged ice cream sandwich, watching a bad movie about something having to do with Moses, and then getting back in the car.”

“Fortunately, there were other parts of the trip that left a more lasting impression,” she adds.

Well, we’re intrigued. Anyone out there know which historical rest stop shows B-movies about Moses AND sells ice cream sandwiches?

(Rebecca Resnick is a writer and freelance television producer who has worked on shows for Animal Planet, the Travel Channel and the Science Channel. She usually stays behind the scenes — except when it comes to faceless cardboard cutouts, which she finds irresistible.)
