Meet the Chinese Gumby

Haibao, the official mascot of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo

SUBMITTED BY: Brian Henderson    LOCATION: Huangshan, China (2010)

The World Expo, the global equivalent of a county fair, used to be a pretty big deal.  TTP remembers hearing their parents talk about the 1964 New York World’s Fair and the 1967 Montreal Expo, which became the namesake of the short-lived baseball team.

We had no idea it was still going on.

China expected about 70 million people to show up to the Shanghai Expo, and to boost the tourist marketing effort they created a mascot that looks like a wad of chewing gum.

Haibao, which means “Treasure of the Seas,” is actually based on the shape of the Chinese character for “people.”  The Chinese government says this mascot was chosen from 26,655 designs submitted by “common people.”

Common people who ripped off Gumby.
