Chinese government bans tacky souvenirs dressing Barack Obama in a Mao Zedong costume

When the Chinese government politely asks a t-shirt designer to stop selling political parody, there’s really only one underlying question to take into consideration:

“Hmmmm… Would I rather have a few hundred dollars or have tanks run over me and my souvenir shop?

These Obama-Mao shirts were selling as fun kitsch, like the cute Maoist terrorist purse that got actress Cameron Diaz in trouble, but ironically they look like they were designed by the Republican National Committee!

In any case, CNN correspondent Emily Chang was much braver when the stormtroopers came to take her t-shirt away. Astonishingly, she refused to surrender it, even after being detained for two hours.

For the record, Obama-Mao coin purses were outselling the t-shirts by a 3:1 margin.

If the Chinese government is going ballistic over a simple cut-and-paste job like ObaMao, I wonder what they would do to the graphic artist who created this Cosmopolitan cover:

It is fair to say that if this Photoshop whiz dares to step foot in China, he or she will get the living crap beaten out of them
